Freedom of Speech under the First Amendment
Freedom of speech, including the freedom to express one's political opinions, views, or convictions, is a fundamental right of all Americans. Political speech is granted full protection under the Constitution unless it is speech which advocates treason against the government, such as overthrowing it by force or violence or putting the nation or public interest in harm's way. Political speech may involve one's personal political beliefs stated or written to others or may be used to rally support for a particular issue, cause, or candidate. Discussions of political issues or causes are protected as forms of political expression; these expressions were formed as basic to the U.S. system of government.

Your political views may extend to a wide range of issues, including those at a national, state, or local level. These views may run the gamut from how to handle the national debt to gay marriage, the sanctity of life, or how to run your local public schools. As a citizen of this country, your views and your expression of them should not expose you to discrimination, defamation, or unfair treatment.
