Academic freedom in the U.S. allows students and teachers to study, instruct, and pursue information, knowledge, research, and the exchange of intellectual ideas without being restricted or interfered with by local, state, or federal laws, regulations, or pressure or by similar pressure or discrimination from the public.

Under the rights guaranteed by the First Amendment, teachers, researchers, and students may inquire into any subject or area of interest or concern to them. They may communicate their findings, opinions, and interpretations to others without liability and are free to publish such information without censorship. Academic professionals are free to instruct their students in any manner or method they deem appropriate to the subject or to the pupil as long as these do not violate slander, libel, copyright, and other basic laws. Academic students are free to study any subject they choose and to form their own opinions and conclusions concerning them.
